I was thinking of grabbing a cup of soup from somewhere, but I really needed to clear my head more than I needed chicken noodle. I usually work through lunch, but as I’ve been working out and getting back into shape, I realize my posture is just terrible from sitting in my uncomfortable chair all day. The walk is good for me physically and mentally.
Walking is something I love to do. My record is 18 miles and that’s nothing because I really want to be fast enough and agile enough to walk the full 26.2 of a marathon. I have no illusions of ever being able to run that distance or any distance of note, but I’m not giving up on the dream of walking it. I walked a 5K a few years back and that just felt great, especially since they gave out medals. Next should be a half marathon and then I’ll do the full one.
Anyhow, back to the now. Take a break every day. You hear all the time how it’s healthy to stand up for a few minutes, and everything you’ve heard is true. Not everyone has a beautiful backdrop like Chicago in which to enjoy such a break, but I don’t think you need it. I think a good pair of headphones (not noise canceling – you always need to be able to hear traffic and what’s around you) and a few minutes with your best thoughts is all you really need.
As I mentioned, I’ve been working out and feeling better about myself. For the first time ever, I joined a gym and found a trainer who’s whipping my ass back into shape, And I’m taking the readings and streaks on my Apple Watch seriously. I’m eating better too. My wife and I order delivery a lot and I’ve found ways to modify the menu at all my favorite restaurants, so that means less cheese and more salad. I’m not depriving myself of anything, but I’m being realistic. At 42, most call me young. But you’re never too young or old to take care of yourself.
What do you like to do during your lunch breaks? Do you get away or do you plow through? Let me know in the comments. I’m always curious about the lives of my readers.
