The Friday Fix: Oct. 30, 2015

Welcome to the Friday Fix, where I share random thoughts to ponder before the weekend.

great-pumpkin-charlie-brownHappy Halloween: Every year I see friends on Facebook dressing up and I think about it for a brief second. And then that second passes. This year I’m trying especially hard not to eat Halloween candy, as I’m on a quest to get back into better shape. That said it’s very hard for me to turn down Mounds bars, Reese’s peanut butter cups and full-sized Kit-Kats. Oh, and Skor bars and caramel and any kind of dark chocolate. Oh and also …

Next year at this same time, I’ll find a pumpkin patch that is real sincere: It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown is the best Halloween special in the world, always has been and always will be. Next topic.

daylight-saving-timeDaylight Saving Time is almost over: It ends at 2 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 1, so make sure you turn your clocks back one hour before you go to bed Saturday night. And please note that it’s Daylight SAVING time, not SAVINGS. If you want to make sure you always know which one is right, memorize this along with spring forward, fall back: It’s not a bank, so it’s not savings. Always works for me.

Don’t be ghoulish — don’t drink and drive: Halloween is a holiday like any other where people go out and party. And with it being on a Saturday this year, it’s extra important to remind you and everyone to be safe and have a designated driver. It’s always good advice.

So how about this weather, huh? From wind chills in the 20s on Thursday morning, which necessitated the use of my jacket to near-record highs in the 70s expected next week, I think this is just the beginning of what’s going to be a crazy-weather winter with above-normal temperatures and little meaningful snow. But as someone who loves snow, I’m hoping that’s completely wrong. Call it a hunch.

scott-kleinberg-intelligentsiaPeet’s is purchasing Intelligentsia Coffee: Intelligentsia is some super high-quality Chicago coffee, and one of my favorite places. Peet’s, which just purchased Stumptown, announced today it’s also buying Intelligentsia. Each place will still be operating independently, which is good, but look out Starbucks … Peet’s seems to be coming for you.

Walgreens is purchasing Rite Aid: I still remember when I was in college, the local drugstore chain was Revco. That’s where I went to stock up on boxes of Kraft Macaroni and Cheese (you know I loved it) to cook in my very dorm-illegal hot pot. I didn’t care. I was such a rebel, bright orange powder and all.

Be kind and reply: If someone is expecting a response from you, please remember to respond. Thank you. And if you still have a VCR, you should still be kind and rewind.

  1. I didn’t even think of dressing up this year. But after reading your post, I thought about it for a second as well. That’s always been the challenge of Halloween for me–what would I even wear as a costume.
